Hotspot of the week: The Fig & Barrel Pub

York welcomed the Fig & Barrel Pub in September 2018 and never looked back. The pub, located in downtown York City at 25 East Market Street in the 110-year-old building originally built by York Railroads Company, serves handcrafted food and libations. The remodeled historic building creates a comfortable and cozy ambiance perfect for enjoying a cocktail and comfort food.

The Story

The Fig & Barrel Pub’s cornerstone is based on wood-fired pizza and quality whiskey. The husband and wife owners, Nathan and Lisa, purposefully created this vision based on their backgrounds and passions. Lisa grew up in a family of pizza makers while Nathan was trained as a mechanical engineer but considers himself a “detail obsessive food science geek” with a deep love for whiskey and pizza.

The two decided to bring their love and knowledge of pizza and authentic libations to life in York city. Once they found the perfect building, the Fig & Barrel Pub was created. They opened in September 2018 and have been wooing everyone who walks through the front door since then.

Food

The menu is simple and includes something for everyone. The Fig & Barrel Pub focuses on elevated comfort foods, and they do it well. The menu includes brunch, think huevos rancheros and french toast infused with Grand Marnier, tapa style small plates like wood-fired mac ‘n cheese or wood-fired brussel sprouts, gourmet grilled cheeses, and entrees like braised short ribs and shrimp and grits. Is your mouth watering yet?

You can’t forget about the wood-fired pizzas. All the pizzas are baked at 800 degrees in the wood fire oven. We recommend you try the Morning Pizza made with smoked provolone, bacon, sausage, basil and topped with a dippy egg, or the Duck Confit topped with house-cured duck confit, balsamic eggplant, gruyere and gouda cheeses, fresh arugula and balsamic reduction. You can’t go wrong with any of the wood-fired pizzas, and if you only try one thing on the menu, it should be a pizza. Explore the Fig & Barrel Pub menu here.

Drinks

The Fig & Barrel Pub has the typical craft beers on tap and a wide selection of wines, but what sets them apart is their cocktails. All non-alcoholic cocktail ingredients are made in-house with fresh ingredients. A good example is Grenadine. They make their own grenadine on-site with fresh pomegranates. The bitters used in cocktails are also made in-house. Enough said, try any signature cocktail, and you won’t be disappointed. Our favorites include the Singapore Sling and Corpse Reviver #2. Check out the full drink menu here.

Events

The Fig & Barrel Pub regularly hosts live music, samplings and pairings, comedy and cocktails, and more. Check their website or Facebook page for upcoming events.

Stop In

The Fig & Barrel Pub is worth a visit if only to see how well they have remodeled their historic building. Grab a drink and a small plate at the bar. Enjoy a handcrafted cocktail by the fireplace. Have a pizza in a booth. Whichever you choose, you will leave happy.
