Gettysburg, PA

Gettysburg is more than a tourist destination for history buffs. While it is a very historic town, it also has much to offer for the locals who live here, too.

Gettysburg has a population of around 7500 and is located very close to the Mason-Dixon Line (Pennsylvania Maryland line) in Adams County Pennsylvania. It is located less than an hour from Frederick, Maryland, and less than two hours from Washington D.C. Gettysburg is also less than an hour commute to either York or Harrisburg. There is always something going on in Gettysburg. Gettysburg is home to the National Military Park and a new Museum and Visitor Center. History buffs can tour the National Cemetery and view the spot where President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address. You can also tour President Eisenhower’s personal home which is a national historic site. There are miles and miles of rolling battlefields that you can hike, run, bike, drive, or even tour on horseback.

For those who like a little more adventure, ghost tours of haunted buildings and battlefields are offered year-round. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the golf courses in and around Gettysburg, including the Links at Gettysburg, a beautifully designed and maintained links-style golf course. Strolling through downtown Gettysburg has a little something for everyone. The historic downtown area is full of diverse businesses from art galleries, theaters, and museums alongside local shops selling crafts, handmade pottery, and civil war relics.

Dining and Nightlife in Gettysburg

There are so many great local restaurants in Gettysburg. You can find great casual dining at restaurants like Food 101 whose menu features artisan pizzas and sandwiches as well as delicious entrees at reasonable prices. If you are looking for something a little more formal, visit the Dobbin House Tavern. The Dobbin House is an AAA-rated restaurant set in a historic home where meals are served by candlelight by servers dressed in period attire.

Gettysburg is also home to multiple breweries and wineries. You can taste, enjoy, and take some home with you. There are four bars on each corner of the Square in Gettysburg where Baltimore, Carlisle, Chambersburg, and York streets come together in a roundabout. The Blue & Gray Bar & Grill and The Pub are two of the locals’ favorites. If you prefer coffee over alcoholic beverages, then Gettysburg has you covered there, too. Eighty-Two Coffee and Ragged Edge Coffee House will keep you caffeinated without Starbucks. But if you enjoy Starbucks coffee, Gettysburg offers multiple Starbucks locations.

There is more to Gettysburg than history and great food and drinks. The Gettysburg public school system ranks above average in many different rankings. Gettysburg is also home to Gettysburg College, a four-year liberal arts and sciences college.
